ANTARCTIC ENCOUNTERS is a documentary of the experiences of crew members onboard the commercial fishing vessel San Aspiring. Departing from South Island's Timaru port they venture towards the fishing grounds of the Ross Sea, breaking through the disintegrating ice shelf as the Antarctic season changes. While fishing for toothfish, a Colossal Squid is caught on a long line and carefully hauled aboard the ship. Actual footage of this unexpected and rare scene aboard the San Aspiring is shown as the crew prepare the Colossal Squid for safe delivery to The Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa. Further documentary coverage features the trip back to New Zealand with magnificent Antarctic scenes and even the sighting of a rare green ice berg. Colossal squid - since 1925, only two of nine adult specimens reported have been intact.
