Nau mai, haere mai. You are warmly invited to a one-day symposium exploring the legacy of Te Kooti Rikirangi Te Turuki, 19th-century Māori prophet and rebel leader.
When: Sat 8 Sep 2018, 10am–5pm (Pohiri, 8.30 – 10.00)
Where: Soundings Theatre, Level 2, and Te Marae, Level 4
Cost: $20 (includes lunch and afternoon tea)
Te Kooti has been portrayed in New Zealand culture as a violent outlaw fighting against colonial expansion. Here, speakers from a number of iwi challenge the myths and share kōrero about his positive influence in their lives over generations. Some of these stories have not been shared publicly before.
This symposium is hosted by Nga Uri o Te Kooti Rikirangi Trust and Te Papa.
Visit Te Papa’s iwi exhibition Rongowhakaata: The Story of Light and Shadow, and discover kōrero and taonga connected to Te Kooti.
A full programme will be available in mid-August.
